Climate change and banana production

As climate change alters the global agricultural landscape, banana growers face new challenges and opportunities. International scientists agree that rising temperatures will impact rainfall patterns, with some regions experiencing increased rainfall and others facing droughts. For banana-growing countries, particularly those in Africa along the equator, this could mean a shift to a more tropical climate with higher temperatures and rainfall. However, growers further north and south may have to contend with hotter and drier conditions.

To thrive in these changing conditions, banana growers must adapt. Erratic rainfall patterns—characterized by intense downpours followed by long dry spells—are becoming the norm. Scientists recommend increasing planting densities to create a micro-climate under the leaf canopy, helping to regulate soil temperature, boost humidity, and reduce evaporation. Additionally, optimizing irrigation through drip systems is crucial to minimize water wastage and ensure consistent moisture for crops.

Du Roi Laboratory, a leader in the production and distribution of premium-quality, disease-free tissue culture banana plants, is here to help growers navigate these challenges. Celebrating 30 years of innovation, Du Roi Laboratory produces over six million tissue-cultured plants annually, serving more than 35 countries worldwide.

“It is possible for banana growers to strategically position their businesses to endure the challenges climate change brings, including such weather extremes as droughts, floods, or ever-rising temperatures,” says Suné Wiltshire, General Manager of Du Roi Laboratory.

Choose resilient varieties like Du Roi Williams

Selecting the right banana variety is critical for success in a changing climate. The Du Roi Williams variety, imported from Australia, was specifically chosen for its resilience in sub-optimal or extreme soil and climatic conditions. Known for its large bunches, longer straight fingers, and higher pack-out of extra-large fruit, the Du Roi Williams has proven its worth. In a recent trial in the Ivory Coast during a particularly hot and dry season, Du Roi Williams outperformed all other varieties, showing no signs of stress and delivering the best pack-out results. Safeguard your business against diseases

In addition to choosing resilient varieties, protecting your plantation from debilitating diseases is crucial. Du Roi Laboratory offers complete traceability from foundation block to grower, ensuring that all material is thoroughly indexed for a wide variety of diseases. For added security, the facility’s banana foundation block is located in a bio-secure greenhouse.

The Du Roi Williams variety was developed through a process called soma-clonal variation, allowing the selection of elite clones for a more robust plant with cylindrical bunches and higher yields. These selections have been internationally evaluated and are commercially distributed with excellent results.

In a significant breakthrough, Du Roi Laboratory acquired the rights to the Formosana variety from the Taiwan Banana Research Institute. This variety has been commercially proven to be highly tolerant against the devastating FOC TR4 Panama disease. Read more about the Formosana variety here.
